Makhana

Makhana, also known as fox nuts or lotus seeds, are the edible seeds of the lotus flower, commonly found in India and parts of Asia. These seeds are harvested from the Euryale ferox plant and are widely used in traditional Indian cuisine, especially during fasting periods. Makhana is valued for its nutritional profile – it’s low in calories, high in protein, and a good source of antioxidants, magnesium, iron, and phosphorus. Due to their light and crunchy texture after roasting, they make an excellent healthy snack alternative to fried or sugary options.

In addition to their use as snacks, makhana is often added to dishes like kheer (a rice pudding), curries, and even stir-fries. Its health benefits include aiding digestion, supporting heart health, managing blood sugar levels, and promoting skin health. Makhana is also known in Ayurvedic medicine for its calming and rejuvenating properties. With the growing trend of healthy eating, makhana has gained popularity worldwide as a superfood.
